What is CitCom.ai?
CitCom.ai is a European project that forms part of the Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) promoted by the European Union to accelerate the development of responsible artificial intelligence. These infrastructures allow for the testing of AI models and robotic solutions in real-world environments, both physical and virtual, ensuring their regulatory compliance. In total, the EU has invested €2.2 billion to launch five TEFs specializing in different sectors: agriculture, health, manufacturing, AI hardware, and smart and sustainable cities and communities. This project falls within the latter category.
Furthermore, CitCom.ai is a large-scale project, comprising 32 partners from 11 different Member States. Within this framework, Valencia hosts one of the three European AI operations centres for Smart Cities and leads the southern “supernode,” focused on connectivity and smart urban infrastructure. This supernode brings together partners from Germany, Poland, and Italy and works in areas such as emissions and pollution reduction, urban and water resource management, the integration of smart facilities, and sustainable tourism, among others.
Within this project, our team from the University of Valencia actively participates, contributing, along with many other partners (public bodies, educational institutions, companies, etc.), their expertise in applied research, urban analysis, and collaboration with the local ecosystem. Our role focuses primarily on the development, testing, and validation of various artificial intelligence solutions in real-world urban environments, promoting an ethical and sustainable digital transition that serves people.
The team receives funding from both European and regional sources, through the Generalitat Valenciana.
