CitCom.AI participates in the Artificial Intelligence in Tourism and Smart City Forum: Innovation, Sustainability and Smart Mobility
On 25th June 2025, the IDAL's (Intelligent Data Analysis Laboratory) research team from the University of Valencia, as a partner in the European CitCom.ai project, participated in the Artificial Intelligence in Tourism and Smart City Forum, held in Valencia, more specifically at La Harinera – Las Naves, managed by Valencia Innovation Capital (Valencia City Council).
The event, under the slogan ‘Innovation, Sustainability and Smart Mobility,’ brought together representatives from the public sector, universities and technology companies, experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence, to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in the development of more sustainable and citizen-centred Smart Cities.
The contribution of the University of Valencia: Artificial Intelligence at the service of tourism and the city
During the forum, Emilio Soria Olivas, a member of our team and professor at the Higher Technical School of Engineering (Department of Electronic Engineering) at the University of Valencia, presented our advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence applied to tourism and urban management, within the framework of the Citcom.ai project.
His intervention first reviewed the recent evolution of AI, from the first recommendation systems to the current era of foundational models (LLMs) and the new frontier of Agentic AI, capable of executing actions and dynamically adapting to the urban context.
The following use cases, both already developed and planned for future development by the team, were highlighted:
- A tourism chatbot for the city of Valencia, powered by large-scale language models.
- Sentiment analysis on social media to measure citizens' perceptions of tourism.
- Optimisation of healthy routes and sales forecasting for the Valencia Tourist Card.
- Detection of anomalies in traffic, noise or pollution to improve urban response.
- And the first prototypes of intelligent agents capable of coordinating tourism resources or dynamically adjusting prices according to demand and environmental conditions.
The meeting also served as a point of exchange between researchers, companies and local administrations, reinforcing Valencia's role as a European benchmark in sustainable urban technologies. It is also the city that leads the ‘southern supernode’ and hosts one of the TEFs (Testing and Experimentation Facilities), testing environments for AI solutions offered to companies, administrations and research centres) that forms part of a European network, as part of the Citcom.ai project itself and applied, in this case, to smart cities and communities. It was very interesting to learn about all the perspectives and applications of AI in the tourism sector and in the urban environment in general, and we hope that our presentation contributed to both them and the audience.
