Participation by the CitCom.ai-UV research team in the 8th edition of the Summer School ‘Challenges in Data Science’

Yesterday, the 1st of July 2026, the research team from the University of Valencia working on the European CitCom.ai project had the opportunity to take part in the 8th edition of the UV Summer School: “Challenges in Data Science”.

As we announced last week in this article in our news section, this is a week-long event organised by the institution itself as part of the Erasmus Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) and with the support of the Valencian Regional Government, which has brought together international students to explore how big data and artificial intelligence are transforming society.

In this context, the event combined theoretical lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions in which students worked in teams to design a start-up project. For our team, this approach provided the ideal framework for linking the cutting-edge research we carry out with young talent, demonstrating in a very practical way the real-world applications of data in urban management.

Our contribution: Artificial Intelligence applied to Smart Cities and urban management

Entitled 'Artificial Intelligence for Smart Tourism Management: The Case of Valencia in the CitCom.AI Project', the session by the Citcom.ai-UV team was led and presented by our colleagues Andrea Bonetti, Adrián Salcedo and Emilio Fernández. During the presentation, the project’s progress in the fields of tourism and smart cities was outlined. Through the use cases developed since the project’s inception, and this time incorporating the key solutions developed over the past year (which set this presentation apart from our participation in the previous edition), the session demonstrated how technology and urban life converge to promote more efficient and sustainable urban management, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

The team provided a technical breakdown of the powerful analytical models and architectures applied directly to the city of Valencia. The use cases presented and explained first-hand by their developers included:

The presentation sparked enormous interest amongst the students and teachers in attendance, as they were able to learn first-hand – that is, directly from the developers themselves – and from a practical perspective, how artificial intelligence is being applied to transform Valencia into a more connected, sustainable and people-centred Smart City. Furthermore, during the talk, the speakers invited the audience to scan the interactive QR code of our project's website so they could try out, live and on their own devices, the applications that the research group has deployed.

Furthermore, at the end of the presentation, a Q&A session was held, during which the students had the opportunity to raise their concerns to our researchers. This enabled us to gather the views and contributions of students from different parts of the world and, ultimately, to exchange knowledge with them, which proved to be an immensely enriching experience.

Here at the CitCom.ai-UV research team, we will continue to work on integrating ethical, responsible and efficient technological solutions to further transform Valencia into a sustainable Smart City focused on people’s wellbeing.
